Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science Program Sept. 2 'Plastics: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'

Plastics are ubiquitous in our lives.
They and organic polymers play essential roles in all our lives, something we take for granted daily.
And, while the glut of plastic bags, plastic straws and plastic bottles have drawn much media attention of late due to the broad detrimental impact they and other forms of plastic have on our environment, it’s not the whole story.
Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science presenter Dr. Dan Bishop will also explore the global benefits of plastics; for example, the surprising fact that tens of thousands of individuals would not be alive today were it not for the impact of plastics in modern medicine and surgery.
Bishop will talk about current issues surrounding plastics, provide anecdotes from his experience as a polymer chemist with Sherwin-Williams and cover the basic science of polymer chemistry and make some predictions relating to plastics of the future.
Dr. Bishop first became interested in chemistry in his high school in Denver and pursued this interest in his undergraduate studies as a Boettcher scholar at the University of Colorado.
After graduation, he worked at the research labs of Sherwin-Williams just outside Oakland before moving to Lawrence, Kansas, where he earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Kansas. He pursued a career teaching college chemistry (and later, computer science) at Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS), at Friends University (Wichita, KS), College of the Ozarks (near Branson, MO) and finally retired from teaching from Colorado State University (Fort Collins, CO). He has also taught computer application classes for Colorado Mountain College.
Dan currently enjoys painting (watercolor, pastel, and acrylics) and learning to play the cello. He serves on the board of the Central Colorado Humanists.
The program is free and will include a question and answer session to follow. Central Colorado Humanists sponsors the Sunday Science presentations on the first Sunday of each month. Admission is free while donations to defer costs are always welcome, and light refreshments will be provided.
