Make a Dragon and Join the Parade

Salida Creativity Lab’s 3rd annual LUNAR NEW YEAR & ASIA FEST

Salida Creativity Lab invites students, families, and community to participate in the 3rd annual Lunar New Year dragon parade on February 8! 2019 is the Year of the Pig! Don your dragon or animal of the zodiac costume and join the fun! Decorated walkers, pets, strollers, wheelchairs, wagons, surreys, bikes, etc. are all welcome in the parade! (No motorized vehicles allowed.)

After the parade, everyone is invited to Asia Fest- a multicultural celebration at the SteamPlant with dragon presentations, drumming, folk dance presentations, arts and crafts, and music. Special appearances by Salida Middle School Groove Battalion, The Salida Circus, and Filipino Cultural Dance. Free admission, and a lively and fun event for the whole family! Asian fusion food will also be available for purchase.

Make or wear your own costume for the parade! (Think dragons, pigs, animals of the Zodiac.) In addition, Salida Creativity Lab will work with over 200 students in our community from late January to mid February. Children from area schools and afterschool programs will create dragon-inspired art, movement, costumes, or props in preparation for the parade and festival.

Additional Student opportunities for Dragon-making:
Students ages 6+ can also participate in dragon-making workshops at the Boys & Girls Club on Weds. Jan, 23, 30, & Feb. 6 from 4:30pm-5:30pm.

Dragon-making workshops for families and community:
Can’t make the workshops at the Boys & Girls Club? There are also free dragon- making workshops at Box of Bubbles Thursdays, January 24, 31, and Feb 7 at 5:30pm. This is an opportunity for parents, grandparents, younger siblings, or groups of friends to create something outside of the school day. Over 3 workshops, attendees will work with Tina to construct a dragon or other prop (dragon head, animals of the zodiac, flag, etc.) for the parade. Attend all 3 for a full dragon, or drop in and out for inspiration! Thanks to sponsors High Country Bank, Kaleidoscope Toys, and Mountain Mail, the workshops are free and open to the public. Have extra cardboard, newspaper, ribbons? Please bring it to add to our stock!
