What Happens to Earth When the Sun Begins to Die?

Scientist Sy Gonzales will present an overview of what will happen in the future as our sun begins to age and deplete its nuclear fuel at the next Central Colorado Humanist Sunday Science program on July 7. The presentation at 10 a.m. at the Salida Scout Hut, 210 E. Sackett St., will examine the study of the past of our Earth, estimated to be more than four and one-half billion years old, as well as a look at the deep future of the sun and our planet, based on the latest scientific advances. Gonzales will discuss topics including what Earth’s future geography may look like, whether our disappearing glaciers will ever return and related subjects.
The sun’s life cycle is well understood to modern science and Gonzales will talk about surprising aspects of thermonuclear fusion in the sun and what happens when a star like our runs out of its nuclear fuel. He will also discuss a projected big change to our Milky Way galaxy. Sy is a retired mathematician and computer scientist. He holds degrees in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science and developed engineering software during a 35-year career. The Central Colorado Humanists sponsor Sunday Science presentations on the first Sunday of each month. Each presentation features a science topic understandable by both scientists and non-scientists. A discussion and light refreshments will follow the talk.
Admission is free while donations are welcomed to help offset costs. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. to allow the program to begin promptly at 10 a.m.
