Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science Oct. 15
Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science release for Oct. 15, 2023:
The status of the recovery of three species of fish in the Rio Grande River drainage will be the topic of the Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program for Oct. 15, 2023. The program begins at 10 a. m. and will feature Daniel Cammack, Southwest Region Native Aquatic Species Biologist for Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
The Rio Grande River drainage in Colorado is home to three federally petitioned species of fish, the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout, the Rio Grande Chub, and the Rio Grande Sucker. Conservation efforts for Rio Grande Cutthroat have enjoyed abundant public support. However, less is known about the recovery of the other two species historically written off as “rough” or “trash” fish. Previously abundant throughout the Rio Grande basin they now occupy a fraction of their historic range where they face a wide array of threats. Cammack will discuss the plight of the two species and CPW’s efforts to assure they will persist into the future.
Cammack grew up in Pagosa Springs with an early passion for the outdoors, especially aquatic ecosystems. His passion led him to a B. S. in Fish and Wildlife Conservation Biology from Colorado State University and later, an M. S. from the same institution. His work prior to the current position includes aquatic technician for CPW and deckhand on a commercial salmon gillnetter out of Cordova, AK. Cammack and family live in Gunnison where they enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer.
Central Colorado Humanists sponsor Sunday Science presentations, normally on the first Sunday of each month at the Scout Hut, 210 E. Sackett St., Salida, CO. This month’s program on the third Sunday is an exception to that practice. Each presentation is informative and features a science topic understandable by both scientists and non-scientists. Doors open at 9:30 a. m. and the talk will start promptly at 10:00 a. m.
Admission is free and the public is welcome. Please join us!
