$10 STD Testing This Week at Planned Parenthood
For the seventh year in a row, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains will offer two discounted testing days for chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV. The cost of each test is an affordable $10. The Planned Parenthood health center, located at 233 E. 2nd in Salida, will be open for testing from 9 AM - 5 PM Tuesday April 21st and from 9 AM - 4 PM Friday the 24th. Appointments are encouraged but not necessary.
The discounted testing days are part of the widespread and collaborative social movement, GYT (Get Yourself Tested), aimed at raising awareness of the importance of vital STD tests among young people. In addition to providing testing services, the GYT campaign increases awareness about STDs and how to prevent them, and promotes a more open dialogue with partners and health care providers.
While STD tests are quick, easy and painless, many young Coloradans refrain from testing due not only to the cost, but to a lack of awareness. In fact, not only will one in two sexually active young people contract an STD by the time they’re 25, most won’t even know they have one.
GYT was launched as an ongoing promotion under “It’s Your (Sex) Life”, a long-standing public information partnership of MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation. The campaign was created seven years ago, specifically to address the disproportionately high rates of STDs among Americans under 25. Half of the estimated 20 million sexually transmitted diseases contracted each year occur among the under-25 age group, although they only represent one-quarter of the sexually active population.
True to the importance of STD Awareness Month, organizations are once again united behind the GYT Campaign. The list includes the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), the American College Health Association (ACHA), and the American College Health Association (ACHA). The campaign received technical consultation provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Last year, PPRM provided 83,769 STD tests (including 17,093 HIV tests) in Colorado alone. By promoting and providing discounted testing, PPRM aims to continue improving the sexual health of all Coloradans.
