Cheryl Brown-Kovacic has announced her candidacy for the Ward 2 City Council position. With a crowd of sixty supporters at Café Dawn on July 21, Cheryl launched her campaign with a lively meet & greet and a stirring speech where she discussed issues critical to Salida: planning for the future, instituting fair housing, broadening Salida’s economic base and looking for consensus in the community. “Local government should reflect citizen priorities and be committed to working together for the good of the community.”

Cheryl has worked for the benefit of the public good throughout her life. She was a secondary school math teacher and a college professor, worked for the State of New Mexico as the Director of Educational Assessment, was a National Science Foundation Fellow, started her own educational consulting business and raised two children.

She and her husband, Larry, moved to Salida in 2005, where, over the past 10 years, she has served on the Chaffee County Heritage Area Board, Salida-area Parks, Open-space & Trails (SPOT), Chaffee County Land Use Roundtable, League of Women Voters, and the Salida Planning Commission. Cheryl is currently the elected Salida City Treasurer.

Cheryl loves living in Salida and believes it is a very special community. “Now is the time to start planning how the community wants Salida to change and grow, that is, to know what the community wants to see happen and where it should happen. Maintaining our small- town character is important. Balancing between attracting tourism and keeping a well-rounded city is critical.” From her experience she has in-depth knowledge of City issues and sees a need for reasoned and balanced approaches. As part of her campaign, Cheryl has been visiting her neighbors in Ward 2 to gain a personal perspective on community concerns and priorities.

Through consensus, communication, and finding common ground, Cheryl aims to help shape a collaborative community. Please visit www.CherylforCouncil.com to learn about future campaign events and her positions and experience.
