Famed concert pianist Anton Nel will solo and perform with the Azalea Quartet at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, August 8 in the fifth concert of the Salida-Aspen Concert series at Salida High School auditorium, 26 Jones Avenue.

The musicians from Aspen Music Festival and School (AMFS) will be interviewed on stage at 6:45 p.m.

Anton Nel played here in 2013 and has soloed with the symphony orchestras of Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, London, and many others. He will solo in the first half of the concert, playing first “Piano Sonata in A major, K. 331” by Amadeus Mozart. Next Mr. Nel will play three sections of Claude Debussy’s “Preludes, Book 2” and Frédéric Chopin’s “Ballade for Piano No. 3 in A flat major, op. 47.”

Following intermission, Mr. Nel will be joined by the Azalea Quartet to perform Antonín Dvořák’s “Quintet for Piano and Strings No. 2 in A major, B. 155, op. 81.” The quintet in four movements is famed for its slow movement called “dumka” that is based on Ukrainian lament.

Anton Nel has been world touring since 1987 when he won the Naumburg International Piano Competition. In 1997, he joined Aspen Music Festival and School as an artist-faculty member. He also heads the division of keyboard studies at the University of Texas at Austin and is on the faculty of the Ravinia Festival near Chicago.

In 2013, four undergraduate musicians from different backgrounds at Indiana University formed the Azalea Quartet, which soon became the quartet-in-residence at the university’s Jacobs School of Music. In April of this year, the Azalea Quartet received the Alice Coleman Grand Prize at the Coleman Chamber Ensemble competition and was invited to spend the summer at the Advanced Quartet Studies at AMFS.

Azalea Quartet members are: Jenna Barghouti, violin; Joy Vucekovich, violin; Ben Wagner, viola and Graham Cullen, cello.

The concert is underwritten by F Street Five and Dime of Salida.
