Colorado Symphony players to perform at SteamPlant Thursday, Feb. 23

New Kids on the Block is coming to Salida. If the name has you thinking of the 90s boy band, think again.

This iteration of New Kids on the Block is a world-class string quintet comprised of the Colorado Symphony’s newest members.

The quintet will perform at the Salida SteamPlant at 7:30 PM on Thursday, Feb. 23 through the ongoing partnership between KHEN 106.9 FM Community Radio’s Symphonic Salida project, and the Colorado Symphony.

“We’re so fortunate to be in our fifth season with the Colorado Symphony,” said Scott Adams, who heads the Symphonic Salida steering team. “Salida is still the only city beyond the Front Range to host regular visits by the Colorado Symphony.”

The five-member ensemble is comprised of world-class musicians Yi Zhao and Ben Odhner on violin; Leah Kovach and Mary Cowell on viola; and Susan Yun on cello.

Student musicians from Salida Strings will begin the evening at 7 p.m. as theater doors open for seating. The student performance is a component of Symphonic Salida’s mission to bring classical music education to local schools.

Following the opening act, New Kids on the Block’s evening performance will commence at 7:30 p.m. with Mozart’s String Quintet in G Minor. The dark, restless piece resolves into an uplifting finale, a stark counterpoint to the arrangement’s introductory movements.

Mozart’s String Quintet in G Minor will be followed by Brahms String Quintet in G Major, an intricate composition with influences of Hungarian music.

As part of Symphonic Salida’s educational mission, the quintet will also play for students at Salida High School the afternoon before the SteamPlant performance.

“We are proud to offer such wonderful programming at no cost to the schools or students,” Adams said. “This is the only exposure to top-level classical music that many of the students will have opportunity to hear.”

The New Kids on the Block performance is the second concert of Symphonic Salida’s 2016/2017 season.

Due to a Colorado Symphony schedule change, the double bass quartet Bach, Bass and Beyond, originally scheduled February 23, has been postponed to March 23 at the SteamPlant. Previously issued tickets may be exchanged at either the SteamPlant box office or at the Salida Chamber of Commerce.
