PSA - Upcoming Salida Recreation Events and Classes for April 2017
APRIL IS TEACHER AND SCHOOL STAFF APPRECIATION MONTH! Please bring in a school badge or other proof of employment and swim for FREE in the public pools all month long. We appreciate you providing a safe, nurturing environment and for teaching and caring for our children day in and day out.
EARTH DAY 2017! Join us for the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area’s annual Earth Day celebration at Riverside Park Saturday, April 22 from 10am to 1pm. AHRA and other community organizations will be set up for fun, educational classes and programs for all ages. Food will be available for purchase from local vendors. Call AHRA at 539-7289 for more information. There will be a Parade of Species from Alpine Park to Riverside Park beginning at 9am. All ages welcome and encouraged to dress as your favorite animal to walk or bike in the parade. Salida Recreation will sponsor Electronic Recycling with Southern Colorado Recycling during the event from 9am-1pm in front of the Scout Hut on Sackett Avenue. AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE OFFERED! Tuesday, April 25 from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Community Room, Mt. Shavano Manor, 525 W. 16th St. in Salida. It is required that anyone attending bring their driver’s license to the class. This is a defensive driving and safety review program designed especially for those who are 50 years old and older. It will qualify and/or renew state qualifications for an insurance discount for those who are 55 or older (state law). The classroom course costs only $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. Class size is limited to 20. Preregistration at the front desk at the Aquatic Center or by calling 539-6738. Walk-in’s may register at the door if space is available. All participants must park on the street as off street parking is reserved for residents of Mt. Shavano Manor.
APRIL TRAVELOGUE! Join Salida Recreation at the Salida Steamplant, Wednesday, April 26 from 7-8:30pm, doors open at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $5/person and a cash bar is available with beer, wine and soft drinks. The April travelogue features Karen Karnuta and her experience cycling the Silk Road from Europe to Asia. Learning about the historical period along this route when dangerous trips across Central Asia brought treasures both East and West led Karen to bicycling across the Karakoram Range, the far west of China and the high steppes of Kyrgyzstan. The scenic beauty, history and modern culture of the varied people along the route made for an incredible and unique trip.
CAKES AND COCKTAILS II! Thursday, April 27, 6-8pm, Salida Steamplant, $30 (includes supplies, instruction and first beer, wine or soft drink). Come learn the basics of cake decorating with a lively, informed and fun instructor, Christian Samora. Ages 21+ only. Register by calling 539-6738 or in person at the Aquatic Center.
