PSA - Upcoming Salida Recreation Events and Classes for May 2017

SPRING POOL CLOSURE! The Hot Springs Aquatic Center will be closed Monday, May 8 through Saturday, May 13 for our annual spring clean-up. We will re-open on Mother’s Day, May 14 from noon to 6pm. Mother’s swim FREE that day (must attend with a child to receive the discount).

MAY APPRECIATION MONTH IS DEDICATED TO MOTHERS! In celebration of Mother’s Day and our pool re-opening after a week-long closure, all mothers are invited to swim FREE in the public pools on Sunday, May 14. We will be open from noon to 6pm. Mother’s must attend with a child to receive the discount.

JIVE AND DIVE! Friday, May 19 from 7 to 9pm, middle schoolers ONLY pool party. Admission is $5 per person. This will be the last Jive and Dive for the school year. We will resume these crazy, fun events in September.

BENEFIT PLANT SALE AND TOUCH–A-TRUCK EVENT! Mark your calendar for Sunday, May 21 for Salida’s premier truck touching event AND a plant sale with a cause! The plant sale featuring garden starts from Weathervane Farm and hanging flower baskets from Brady's West, will begin at 10am and will benefit the Salida Montessori Charter School and Children's Discovery Ranch. A bake sale during the event will benefit Salida High School Cheer Team. They will also have t-shirts and window decals for sale. The event will be held in the parking lot and lawn east of the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center (410 W Hwy 50). The big rigs, equipment and trucks will begin arriving at 9:30am for exploration to begin at 10am. These events will wrap up at noon. This event is FREE to the public.

LOYAL DUKE’S CANINE COMPANION 5K! Salida Recreation and the members ofriends of Loyal Duke and the Salida Dog Club are bringing back a popular event we have not seen in four years! This is a 5K Fun Run/Walk for dogs; must be attached by leash to a human. Members of Friends of Loyal Duke are making strides to renovate the structure on S Mountain that was originally built in 1902 and this event is to raise awareness of this Loyal Duke’s Memorial Renovation. Some of the adoptable Ark Valley Humane Society Shelter Dogs will be attending this race. Preregistration is $30 and human participant is guaranteed a t-shirt. Race day registration is $35. Check-in begins at 8am at Loyal Duke’s Dog Park, where the race will both begin and end. Race time is at 9am. The event includes food, prizes and a big dog party! Individuals wishing to participate or volunteer should contact Salida Recreation at 539-6738 or [email protected]. Race entry fee by May 26 is $30, race day entry is $35. If registration is received by May 17, the handler is guaranteed a t-shirt for the event. T-shirts can be picked up at the “Meet and Greet Your Competitor” Friday, May 26 from 5-6pm at the dog park or at check-in beginning at 8am on race day.

AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTING 101 CLASS! Learn to respond to emergencies, communicate with parents, make good decisions, recognize safety and hygiene issues, feed, diaper, and care for infants and start your own babysitting business. This 16 hour Red Cross training course is for girls and boys ages 11-15 and includes pediatric CPR and basic first aid certification. Fee includes instruction, certification and printed materials. Classes scheduled for Tues, 5/30, Wed, 5/31 and Thurs, 6/1, 9am to 4pm each day, at the Tenderfoot Hill room 189 in the Touber Building. Cost is $100. Registration deadline is May 19. Class is limited to 10 students. Register at the pool or call 539-6738.
