Dine Out to Support Summer Food and Mountain Lion Backpack Program for Students May 1-4th

Amicas and The Boathouse are donating a portion of their sales to the Healthy Meals 4 Kids (HM4K) Program during this “dine out” event May 1st-4th. In addition, Café Dawn is donating proceeds of their sales on Friday, May 2nd and Moonlight Pizza’s Moonlight Monday on Monday, May 5th will benefit HM4K, a program that helps ensure that all children in Chaffee County have access to healthy meals when school is not in session.

Donations needed for after-prom party

Organizers are requesting community support in the form of a donation of product, gift certificate or money to the Salida High School After Prom Party. The deadline for individuals or businesses wishing to donate is March 1.

Handy Work

With the completion of the Columbine single track trail – 2013 marked another successful year for all the hard working volunteers at Salida Mountain Trails.

Not willing to rest on their previous accomplishments the crew at Salida Mountain Trails have laid out ambitious goals for 2014. This year plans include new work on the Cottonwood and Arkansas Hills trail systems as well as developing a master plan for the Methodist Mountain Trail.

HRRMC Auxiliary sponsors Project Christmas Greetings

Instead of sending holiday cards this year, the HRRMC Auxiliary is inviting community members to donate the money they traditionally spend on cards and postage to Project Christmas Greetings. The money raised by Project Christmas Greetings is put toward the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to college students in the Salida Hospital District planning a career in health care.

One of the issues that was raised at a recent council meeting was the City’s Pay Plan, the approach that has been developed to fairly compensate City staff. There was quite a kerfuffle over the amount in the bonus or merit pay category.

Ed Quillen Anthology Now Available

Popular Denver Post columnist and long-time Salida resident Ed Quillen died suddenly last June, leaving behind a lifetime of writing, including thousands of weekly columns.

Abby Quillen, his daughter, has compiled his later columns into a sequel to his 1998 collection, Deep in the Heart of the Rockies. The new anthology is entitled Deeper into the Heart of the Rockies, and it is for sale now at Amazon.com, The Book Haven in Salida, and a growing list of other booksellers. [...]

Bike Fest Underway!

Don’t miss tonights screening of The Rider and the Wolf, the story of Mike Rust, produced by Grit and Thistle Film Company of Salida. Also today, Bike Rodeo at Longfellow and a 5:30 Mtn Bike Ride educating the public on trail building.

Convenience is the enemy, drowning in plastic.

I hope that everyone will be able to take their lunch break this Friday, May 17th and walk or ride your bike downtown and view the plastic bag chain created by the students of the Crest Academy. 12,000 plastic sacks (the number of bags given out every two days by Safeway and WalMart in Salida) will be tied together and stretched up the hill in a great visual demonstration to help us see our wasteful ways.

The mail-in ballot application deadline looms in 8 days – less than 50 voters had applied last week out of 18,000 people who live in the Hospital District.  Yet how many will find the time to vote in person on Tuesday May 7th?  This may not seem to matter as much as county, state or federal elections, but stands to set a huge precedent making accountable governance harder for years to come.

This month’s trail work day on the Little Rainbow Extension will be a bit different with longer hours and hopefully more fun – really! Join us Saturday, October 13 from 10AM – 4PM.
