The Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas hosts their annual conservation program and fundraiser on November 17, from 5-9 pm at the Steam Plant. This year, the featured speaker is adventurer Andrew Skurka who walked, skied and packrafted nearly 4,700 miles across some of the wildest lands in North America. Both the National Geographical Society and Outside Magazine have named Skurka as “Adventurer of the Year” for his very long wilderness walks using the most minimal equipment. The event also features the 2011 Conservationist Award, a delicious light dinner by Michelle Gapp of Kalamatapit and a silent auction full of unique items like llama packing.

Salida – On October 29 from 9-11 am, join the Land Trust’s Executive Director, Andrew Mackie, on a casual hill walk to explore the Land Trust’s 2010 conservation easement near downtown Salida. The walk is the second event in the 2011 Protecting Land Series, sponsored by the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas.
Walkers will explore the land included in the conservation easement, which is located just north of downtown Salida in the popular Arkansas Hills recreation area. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about conservation easements, why this project was attractive to the Land Trust, what other projects are planned for this area, and what other recreation projects the LTUA is working on in the Upper Arkansas Valley.
