Josh Been Show to Benefit the Land Trust – December 17

Local artist Joshua Been hosts grand opening show to benefit the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas

Salida – Join artist Joshua Been for the 3^rd Annual Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas Benefit Show on December 17 from 6 to 9 pm at the new Virtuosity Gallery, 204 North F Street in downtown Salida.

Been is quickly becoming a well-known artist in the American West, and in just the last year, his work has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Magazine and Cowboys and Indians Magazine.

The show is also the grand opening of Been’s new gallery location in the lobby of the refurbished Palace Hotel. Been’s work includes his popular landscapes and he has created many new miniature pieces for the show.

30% of all sales during the event benefit the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas to support their work to protect important natural, agricultural, scenic, historical lands and water resources in Chaffee, Lake, Fremont, Saguache and Park Counties.

Joshua Been will be on hand to talk about his work. Andrew Mackie, executive director of the Land Trust, will be present to talk about the organization’s mission and projects.

Light snacks and drinks will be served, and the first 25 people in the door receive a free Joshua Been calendar.

The Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas is a non-profit, membership based organization that protects important natural, agricultural, scenic, historical lands and water resources in Chaffee, Lake, Fremont, Saguache, and Park counties to enhance the quality of life for people in the region. Celebrate the OTR Record of Decision with Christo

It’s very excited to announce that Christo will be returning to the Arkansas River Valley.. This will be his first visit since the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued the Over The River Record of Decision (ROD) on November 7, 2011.

The Record of Decision gave Federal approval to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s original vision to suspend 5.9 miles of fabric along a 42-mile stretch of the Arkansas River. This marks the end of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process and the first time that a work of art has undergone this comprehensive Federal analysis.

To celebrate the Over The River Record of Decision, Christo will be hosting Supporter Appreciation Receptions in Cañon City and Salida. He greatly appreciates all the hard work that supporters have done over the last several years. To recognize that dedication and perseverance, Christo will be providing and signing free Over The River posters to all supporters who attend the receptions!

Christo and Friends of Over The River (FOR) also want to encourage you to not let up in your efforts. Even though the EIS is complete, Over The River still needs permits from Fremont and Chaffee counties. What happens during the next few months will be essential to making Over The River a reality. Information about the next steps of the local permitting process and ways to get more involved will be available at the receptions.

All supporters are welcome to attend, so please invite your friends and neighbors to help us commemorate this historic milestone!

Alpine Orchestra fall concerts

Never too old, never too young, to enjoy Victor Herbert’s “March of the Toys”; Saint-Saen’s “Carnival of the Animals”; or Rossini’s ”William Tell Overture,” made famous by the Lone Ranger. Also on the program this month. prelude from “Hansel and Gretel” by Engelbert Humperdinck; Vivaldi’s “Concerto in D Minor”; and “Fantasy on America” by Vaclav Nelhybel, variations inspired by “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.”

The forty piece symphony, conducted by Dr. Farrell Coy, is in its 21st season and has members from throughout central Colorado. Young string students of violinists Noelle Hogan and Kirsten Campbell…members in training…will again join the orchestra for several numbers.

Concerts will be held Friday, November 18th, 7:30 p m, at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville; Saturday the 19th, 7:30 p m. at Salida SteamPlant Theatre; then a matinee on Sunday the 20th, 3 p m, at Mountain Heights Baptist Church, Buena Vista. Everyone is welcome. There is no admission charge but contributions are appreciated to help defray expenses.

BLM issues record of decision for Over The River

DENVER – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) today issued the Record of Decision (ROD) on Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s proposed temporary work of art, Over The River, following the earlier issuance of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in July. The ROD gives final approval to the artists’ original vision to suspend 5.9 miles of fabric panels in eight separate areas along a 42-mile stretch of the Arkansas River in southern Colorado. It also identifies over 100 measures to mitigate impacts identified in the EIS, including traffic, safety, wildlife and others. The ROD is the final step in the comprehensive environmental review process that the BLM began in February of 2009.

“This is the most significant milestone yet in completing Over The River,” said Christo, “and we can now get to work applying for the few remaining permits that we still need. We are much closer to finally realizing this work of art that Jeanne-Claude and I first envisioned many years ago. Although our team is still reviewing the ROD, I am confident that we can now move forward so we begin construction in the summer of 2012.”

Approvals have already been obtained from the Colorado State Parks Board and the Colorado State Land Board. Permits are still needed from Fremont and Chaffee Counties, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Patrol.

The temporary work of art will be displayed between Salida and Cañon City in southern Colorado for two consecutive weeks in August of 2014 at the earliest.

Over The River is a temporary work of art by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Christo plans to suspend 5.9 miles of silvery, luminous fabric panels high above the Arkansas River along a 42-mile stretch of the river between Salida and Cañon City in southern Colorado. Congratulation to the Amica’s Pizza and Brewey for their award at last weekend’s Great American Beer Festival. Their Ute Trail Pale Ale was awarded a bronze medal in the American-Style Pale Ale category against 105 Entries. The 30th edition of the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) is the premier U.S. beer festival and competition. It served over 2,000 different beers, in one-ounce tasting portions, from an estimated 465 U.S. breweries to the event’s 49,000-plus attendees. The entire event sold out in just one week.
