Jimmy Descant’s show “A decade of crutches and coffins” has it’s official reception Saturday, July 9, 5-8. Michelle Gapp will be catering, and wine will be provided by the SteamPlant. The show is hung throughout the annex hallway gallery.

A significant milestone was reached recently when the Colorado State Parks Board unanimously approved an agreement to allow Over The River to be exhibited on selected areas managed by State Parks within the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area.

The 35th season of Salida Aspen Concerts opens Saturday, July 9 with performances by two established pianists, Wu Han and Rita Sloan, who teach at the Aspen Music Festival and School, and Wu Han’s daughter Lillian Finkel and another Aspen student Brian Ge.

Timbo Scursso of Solarwise Natural Building and Design in Salida is promoting the “Build Local” movement. Using San Luis Valley straw, Canon City clay and Salida timbers, Scursso builds custom strawbale homes that incorporate local and natural materials from the area. Read about his techniques here.

An exhibition of major works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude will be on display at the Salida SteamPlant Ballroom from June 20 to July 28, 2011. The free exhibition will include nearly 20 framed and signed prints from the artists’ projects all over the world, including The Gates in New York City’s Central Park, Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, Surrounded Islands in Miami and Pont Neuf in Paris.

Deadly Currents is a new outdoor adventure mystery that takes place in Salida, the Arkansas River and the local river culture. In the book, the heroine is a raft guide who leaves her job as a guide to become a river ranger with the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA). While on duty, a river client dies under mysterious circumstances and the heroine tries to solve the crime.

Similar to TED or The Idea Festival, Artposium will be held in Salida on memorial Day Weekend. Grant is the Executive Director of The Art Ranch. This event represents the synergy between art and scientific disciplines that provides a new way of thinking on a variety of topics. It is open to the public.
