Boater dies near Fisherman’s Bridge

On July 12, 2014 at approximately 1230 pm there was a whitewater related boating accident on the Arkansas River in Chaffee County, Colorado. The accident occurred between the Fisherman’s Bridge area and Browns Canyon located approximately 8 miles south of Buena Vista, Colorado.

Kayaker dies in Pine Creek

On 07/11/2014 at approximately 2:49 pm there was a whitewater related boating accident on the Arkansas River in Chaffee County, Colorado. The accident occurred in the Pine Creek Rapid section of the Arkansas River, approximately 10 miles north of Buena Vista, Colorado.

Revelers Beware

For the second year, The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office has received a grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to fund overtime for patrol deputies enforcing statutes related to drunk and drugged driving.  Deputies will be working these assignments over the Saint Patrick’s Day weekend March 14 through March 18, a time traditionally associated with parties and alcohol consumption.  The grant, totaling $3,000, is for the first half of 2014 and is expected to be renewed for enforcement efforts [...]

Hikers found safe after search

A married couple was found safe Friday afternoon by Chaffee County Search and Rescue volunteers after the two spent an unplanned night on Mount Columbia. Dale Baldridge, 70, and his wife, Joyce Baldridge, 65, visiting from Michigan, made a 911 call at about 5:30pm Thursday saying they were too exhausted to continue their descent from the summit.
