The Unique Theater first opened as an opera house on New Years Day, 1890. The theater was converted to films sometime in the 1930’s. It was truly, as it’s name suggested, unique. Riding my bike down the alley yesterday I was stunned by it’s sad demise.

Crime stoppers seeks information on Hunt Street arson(0)

On July 5th 2011 in the early morning hours an unoccupied house that is owned by the City of Salida in the 300 block of Hunt Street was intentionally set on fire by an unknown person or persons. The unoccupied house was a total loss.

Fire danger rating high. Sheriff declares fire ban(0)

Chaffee County Sheriff Pete Palmer announced today that the fire danger rating for all private lands in the county has been raised to HIGH and has further declared today a no-burn day. No open fires are allowed, including all exempted fires.

Between the dates of March 22nd and March 24th 2011 a residential burglary took place in the 800 block of “C” street. Numerous electronic items were taken along with a 40” Samsung flat screen TV.

On April 3rd 2011, two abstract 8×10 oil paintings were found to be stolen from the Salida Public Library. A local female artist created the paintings and displays her work at the library. The frames the paintings were displayed in were left behind
