Crest Students seeks plastic bag fee of 5-10 cents(8)

Our school is working to pass an ordinance that would place a 5-10 cent fee on plastic bags in Salida stores. Consumers would have the choice to bring their own reusable bags (for free of course!) or pay a fee for each plastic or paper bag used.

Recycling services in The Ark River Valley(3)

We have had some inquiries about commercial and home recycling services in the valley. Please tell us, and your neighbors what you know. Our goal is to gather general information and an inventory of costs, options and a rundown of what happens to the waste once it leaves our sight. The latter is important as we have had inquiries recently that make it clear most folks don’t know where our valley’s recycling ends up. Please help contribute to The Citizen’s knowledge base. Thanks!

Wastewater Treatment Plant Update(6)

Wastewater Treatment Plant construction began September 28, 2011 with mobilization, excavation and demolition of old equipment. During the last four months, 40,000 yards of earth have been removed from the site and stored on property owned by Larry Hughes to use for future backfilling around the new treatment system.

Open letter to Doug Lamborn(16)

I just received a mailing from your office and would like to express my opinion on a couple of subjects. I noticed that the mailing was “prepared, paid for and published at taxpayer expense.”

Alvin Youngblood Hart & Valerie June perform at the SteamPlant(0)

Grammy Award-winning bluesman Alvin Youngblood Hart will perform with Valerie June at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Jan.27, at the SteamPlant Event Center. Described as a musician’s musician, Hart has garnered praise from the likes of Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton. Legendary bluesman Taj Mahal once said of Hart, “The boy has got thunder in his hands.”

Small town cash mob(6)

It began quietly, as an email to 40 friends. But when a steady stream of customers began coming through the door before the family-owned Chagrin Hardware had even opened for the day on Saturday, it was clear that it had turned into much more than that.

What technology tools will Salida’s new High School provide?(0)

Today Apple unveiled iBooks 2, a “new textbook experience” for the iPad. This represents the company’s attempt to bury traditional schoolbooks and change the landscape forever. Fortunately, because we passed the BEST grant, we have the ability to be at the leading edge as the old textbook quickly dies.

A letter from Mark Udall(2)

About this time last year, I called on my colleagues in Congress to set aside our political differences and sit together – instead of divided by party – during the president’s State of the Union Address.
