Seven Salida High School students spent Friday, January 27, shadowing staff members at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.

Salida, Colorado—Seven Salida High School students spent Friday, January 27, shadowing staff members at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.

The students were participating in Shadow Day, a new educational initiative at the hospital designed to introduce high school students to health care careers. The program is modeled after the University of Colorado’s Rural Health Scholars Program, according to HRRMC Education Coordinator Peg Arnett.

This was the second of two sessions at the hospital for the students. They also attended a Career Day on January 13, which introduced them to various careers at the hospital. The students then selected one clinical area to shadow staff on January 27. Students visited the emergency, medical imaging, surgical services, intensive care, cardiopulmonary and rehabilitation departments.

Juniors Kayla Gobin and Rio Wintz spent the day with the medical imaging staff. They visited with radiologist Daniel Wardrop, M.D, and learned about different imaging modalities. Radiologic technologist Kris Cary explained how a CT scan works and let the students lie down in the scanning bed to imitate the scan experience so they could better understand the patient’s perspective.

Salida High School guidance counselor Robert Tressler helped arrange the student visits. Both sessions at the hospital were cosponsored by Salida Rotary Club as part of its educational efforts. Rotary provided liability insurance coverage for the students.

HRRMC plans to roll out this program to Buena Vista and Cotopaxi high school students in the future, said Arnett. “It is part of HRRMC’s commitment to give budding nurses, doctors and other health care providers a chance to learn about health care in a rural area and eventually practice there.”

HRRMC was designated a Center of Excellence in Rural Training by the University of Colorado in 2011.

The hospital hosts students in many disciplines, including medicine, nursing, nurse anesthesia, pharmacy and rehabilitation.

On Friday, a sheriff's deputy received information from a confidential source that a drinking party involving underage persons was to take place the following evening at a private residence near Buena Vista.

CHAFFEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Salida, Colorado

PRESS RELEASE
For release Monday, January 23, 2012

On Friday, a sheriff’s deputy received information from a confidential source that a drinking party involving underage persons was to take place the following evening at a private residence near Buena Vista. Using FaceBook, the deputy learned that a party was planned to celebrate the seventeenth birthday of a local woman and that forty-seven persons, several of them under the age of twenty-one, had responded to the invitation and were to attend. The deputy then obtained a search warrant for the premises and at about 10:30pm Saturday, assisted by another deputy and two officers from the Buena Vista Police Department, entered the home where the party was in progress.

Three persons were arrested. Alex Canty, 26, the resident, was charged with permitting the serving of alcohol to an underage person. Jessica Armstrong, 18, a host at the party, was charged with permitting the serving of alcohol to an underage person; and illegal consumption of alcohol by an underage person. Sam Ortega, 19, was charged with illegal consumption of alcohol by an underage person.

Canty and Armstrong were jailed on $1500 bonds each. Ortega was released on summons.

A marijuana smoking pipe and a small quantity of marijuana were seized during the search of the residence.

Investigation into this incident continues and additional charges may be filed.

The Sheriff‚s Office will be following this case as it winds its way through the court process. Citizen input from community forums held in October clearly indicated that the community has a strong interest in preventing underage access to alcohol and drugs and desires to see robust enforcement and prosecution of offenders.

The Alliance Against Domestic Abuse is excited to announce the 27th ANNUAL CHOCOLATE LOVER’S FANTASY on Saturday, February 11th from 5:30-8:00pm at High Country Bank in Buena Vista. Chocolate Lover’s Fantasy is AADA’s longest standing fundraiser and has something for everyone. There will be hors d’oeuvres, wine from Little Daisy Liquor, live music provided by Blue Collar Poets and Red Tischer and lots of CHOCOLATE! Community members have described Chocolate Lover’s as “the best event held in Buena Vista”.

Between bites, attendees can join the spirited silent auction that will include many unique and valuable items donated by local businesses. This year some of the hot items in the silent auction are: Monarch Mountain Lift tickets, a stay at Hahn’s Have B&B, and massage gift certificates from Las Manos.

Table Sponsors join the spirit of the evening to let their imagination and creativity run wild by providing chocolate and appetizers on their own chocolate-themed decorated table. Throughout the evening, attendees and local celebrity judges vote for their favorite table based on originality, presentation, creativity, and taste. From those votes, Table Sponsors may win one of two awards: Best Table voted on by the judges; and People’s Choice in which the attendees decide which is their favorite table. The Best Table winner receives a traveling plaque recognizing their business for their excellent food in addition to their community support of AADA.

Chocolate Lovers’ Fantasy is a perfect pre-Valentine’s Day date, a fun-filled Girls’ Night Out, or just a great reason to get out. Please join us and help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 to provide essential support and services to victims of domestic violence and their children.

Tickets are available for advance purchase at the Salida and Buena Vista Chambers of Commerce. Visit www.salidaalliance.org or call 719-539-7347 for information.
