Plant Sale & May Faire on Saturday, May 19 from 10 am – 2 pm at Centennial Park in Salida.
This fundraiser supports educational opportunities for Chaffee County children.
The Plant Sale will be taking place alongside the city’s Touch-a-Truck event.
You are invited to pack up the family, come to Centennial Park on May 19 and experience the trucks,
purchase plants for your summer garden and enjoy a Saturday with the kids!

National Bike Challenge

Openings for 7/8th grade class at The Crest Academy

The Crest Academy, a small Salida public school with a philosophy of Project and Place Based learning, has 2-3 openings for the 2013 7th/8th grade class. The Crest offers students small classes and individualized teacher attention in a supportive community environment.

Crest’s curriculum is based on the Colorado state standards. We use the philosophy of Project Based learning to encourage students to use their own learning styles, creativity, and interests to explore subject matter on a deeper level. Projects also emphasize 21st century skills and our students excel at using technology, public speaking, working as a team, and self motivation. In keeping with our Place Based philosophy, which emphasizes connecting with our community, we get out into the community for P.E., Environmental Studies, volunteering, and various other community activities at least once a week.

The HRRMC community is fortunate to have the opportunity to elect Marilyn Bouldin to their hospital board. In the years I worked with Marilyn in community and academic nursing, she was an exceptional healthcare and nursing advocate, energetic, committed, and a visionary leader. She advanced community healthcare while respecting needs and traditions. I’m confident she will be no less committed as a member of the HRRMC hospital board.

Experience the thrill of a zipline tour while supporting GARNA

Captain Zipline Lost Canyon Zipline Tours is sponsoring a fundraiser for the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA). On Saturday, May 12, Captain Zipline will offer their “Classic Zip Trip” tour and will donate a significant portion of the ticket price back to GARNA. The experience consists of seven thrilling cables rides, including the new “Intimidator Zipline” and a 700 foot canyon river line. Tour guides will explain the complex geology, natural, mining and local history of the area as well as describe the flora and fauna in the region. Following the Zipline tour, there will be an after-zip party for all participants with a campfire and music if the weather cooperates. All equipment will be provided. Participants will be trained on how to zip, control and steer on the “bunny” short low cables before venturing across the scenic and historic Lost Canyon. This opportunity is open to anyone seven years or older; the weight minimum is 55 lbs. Participants must be reasonably fit – some walking is required. The group will meet at the Captain Zipline office, 331 H St. in Salida at 3:00 p.m. and leave Lost Canyon at 7:00 p.m. The cost of the tour is $69 per person; this is a $20 discount off the regular price and includes a van ride to the site. Upper Arkansas Valley – May 3, 2012 – Vino Salida is hosting a benefit for the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas on May 5, 2012 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Ticket price is $45 per person. There are only a handful of tickets left and can be purchased by contacting the Land Trust office at 719-539-7700 or 128 East First Street, Salida.

Help support the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas and enjoy some amazing local wines crafted by winemaker Steve Flynn. Ticket price also includes a pairing menu inspired by South of the border cuisine in honor of Cinco de Mayo. The delicious food creations are by Kalamatapit Katering. We will also be entertained by the lively music of G. Vroom and his Looney Tunes. The Land Trust will also briefly highlight their work in the past year during the evening. This event promises to be a great time with exceptional wine and food and fun music. Don’t miss out.

The Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas works to protect agriculture in the region including ranches, farms, and other agricultural products that come from the land. Executive Director of the Land Trust, Andrew Mackie, states “This is the second year of a partnership between the Land Trust and Vino Salida. We are thrilled that Steve Flynn realizes the importance of what we do and is so generous in supporting our work.” Vino Salida wines are one of the Colorado agricultural products that helps support our local economy. Steve makes the connection between what he produces and protecting important agricultural and natural lands. He comments that “As a winemaker, I take great care in meeting with Colorado grape growers and honey producers, learning how the vines and bees are managed. The taste of my wines is a direct result of these relationships and the land on which these products are raised.”
