Gary W. Higgins, Preservation Architect retired from the National Park Service, will present “A Million Bricks – The Restoration of Fort Moultrie, S.C.” at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday May 25 at the Salida Regional Library meeting room. This presentation is the Historic Salida, Inc. observance of National Historic Preservation Month, and also commemorates the sesquicentennial of the beginning of the Civil War.

Fort Moultrie, a coastal fortification at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, is best known for its role in the bombardment of Fort Sumter, firing the first shots of the Civil War. However, it became “an almost sacred spot” for residents of the Palmetto state when its guns defeated a British fleet during the Revolutionary War. The fort is recognized nationally as the premier example of coastal fortifications through time.

This free presentation will chronicle the National Park Service restoration of the iconic fort by a collaborative team of historians, architects, archaeologists, interpreters, and others to show how America’s coastlines have been defended through our history as a nation. Gary Higgins, a restoration team member, will bring a set of excellent visuals and anecdotal information to share the restoration process with us.

Its mission is to make history interesting and enjoyable while encouraging protection of our historic buildings and properties.

Bluegrass on the Arkansas, an annual fundraiser for the Salida Rotary Club, will be back in Riverside Park on Sunday, May 29th from Noon until 6:00 PM. Admission is free.

Headliners are winners of the 2008 Telluride Bluegrass Festival band contest. Also featured is Spring Creek, 2007 contest winners and a local favorite. Waiting on Trial, a talented group from Durango, also promises an excellent performance. A special attraction will be the opening performance of rising local talent, the Powell Sisters.

This is a free event that our community enjoys every year and draws visitors to Salida. In addition to the line-up of bluegrass bands, volunteers from the Rotary Club have games available for kids making this a fun day for families.

This year, the event will also serve as a post-race celebration for the inaugural year of the “Arkansas River Bluegrass Marathon and Half Marathon” organized by the Chaffee County Running Club, along with the Salida Recreation Department.

The Salida Rotary Club will serve food and drinks as a fundraiser to help the youth of our community in the form of vocational and scholastic scholarships.

Food options will be expanded this year to include vegetarian wraps and chicken sandwiches in addition to hamburgers and hotdogs. Beer, wine and sodas will also be available for sale.

Schedule

Noon – Powell Sisters
12:45 – Spring Creek
2:00 & 4:00 – Waiting on Trial
3:00 & 5:00 – Blue Canyon Boys

Powell Sisters (Noon)

The Powell Sisters, with Phoebe, age 13, on fiddle and Harper, age 12, on guitar are Salida area natives. Phoebe and Harper began playing and singing four years ago. They bring their youthful energy and hard work to their bluegrass, old-time, and folk music.

Harper and Phoebe are regulars in the local open mic scene and are sure to delight the audience as the openers for the event.

Spring Creek (12:45 PM)

In Colorado’s wild west, Spring Creek has found its niche in the nexus between the strict traditionalist pickers and the free-wheeling jam bands, setting a high standard for dynamic live performances. Spring Creek still adheres to the old-school bluegrass standard for tasteful picking and vocal harmonies, while stretching out to showcase intricate arrangements and unique songwriting. The band flows into each new song, creating the feeling of being airborne that extends the experience into ever-changing new and different directions. Founding members Taylor Sims (guitar), Alex Johnstone (mandolin, fiddle) and Chris Elliott (banjo) have recently been joined by Danny Booth on upright bass, also a young veteran of the bluegrass stage

Waiting on Trial (2:00 PM & 4:00 PM)

Focusing on songwriting and performing mostly original material, Waiting on Trial has a true passion for music. In the bands words, they play because it is what they love. Their music is old timey with a youthful energy. Based in Durango, the band will perform as a quartet for this show with Robin Davis on fiddle, Ryan Doty on guitar, Chris Lane playing a 3-finger style banjo, and Ryan Zernis on bass.

Blue Canyon Boys (3:00 PM & 5:00 PM)

Every once in a while, a band comes along that stands out amongst the crowded fields of the bluegrass world. The Blue Canyon Boys, a premier bluegrass band in the Rocky Mountain region, are one of those bands. Blending the incredible brother-duet style vocals of Gary Dark and Jason Hicks; national bluegrass banjo champion Jeff Scroggins’ fiery, hard-driving style; and the mean bass slapping of veteran extraordinaire Drew Garrett; the Blue Canyon Boys are bound to drive audiences to their feet begging for more! While deeply rooted in the long history of bluegrass, they combine insightful originals and thoughtful arrangements into a new hard-driving bluegrass style unique to the Blue Canyon Boys.

With four well-received recordings (“Mountain Bound” 2010, “House Full of Sorrow” 2009, “Hello City Limits” 2008, and “Just an Ol’ Dirt Road” 2005), that have garnered heavy airplay across the country and around the world, and their win of the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band competition in 2008, the Blue Canyon Boys have been steadily working their way into the hearts of bluegrass music lovers across the West. From the first sound of the hard driving banjo to the final rumble of the doghouse bass, the Blue Canyon Boys are sure to entertain and energize.

On Tuesday, May 17th, at 7:00 PM in the SteamPlant Theater, Chaffee Citizens for Sustainability and Guidestone will host a special screening of ‘the Economics of Happiness’, a 2011 documentary about the worldwide localization movement. Cost is $5, children under 12 free.

Both hard‐hitting and inspiring, ‘the Economics of Happiness’ demonstrates that millions of people across the world are already engaged in building a better world. United around a common cause countless small scale initiatives are working to rebuild more democratic, human scale, ecological and local economies – the foundation of an ‘economics of happiness’.
Featuring a chorus of voices from six continents calling for systemic economic change, the documentary describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and Big Business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re‐regulation of trade and finance. Communities are coming together to re‐build economies based on a new paradigm ‐ an economics of localization.

A discussion of our area’s movement towards localization will follow the screening. Local business sponsors are: Benson’s Tavern, Moonstone Ventures, Natural Habitats, Rebound Physical Therapy, Salida Cutlery & Smoke Shop, Simmering Cup, Tenderfoot Health Collective, The Book Haven, The Fritz, and Vino Salida.

Auditions for Twelfth Night will be held May 22 from 4 to 6 PM in the basement at the Salida Cafe. High Country Fine Arts and Stage Left Theater Company have joined forces to sponsor the production which will take place August 20 and 21 in Salida and Buena Vista. No acting experience is required to audition and Director Devon Jencks is looking for interested young teens and young adults. Jencks’ background includes directing Shakespeare with high school students in various Boston communities and in The NorthEast Kingdom of Vermont. Says Jencks, “Shakespeare is my passion and I would like to share the joy, energy and timelessness of this work with others. Shakespeare is and should be fun! Living, breathing, touchable. Shakespeare may be dead, but his words, stories, characters still speak for all of us. It is my goal to excite people, empower young actors and inspire them to want to do more Shakespeare in the future, to read it, to go see a production elsewhere or come watch it here in our communities this summer!”

CHAFFEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Salida, Colorado

PRESS RELEASE
For release Sunday, May 8, 2011

The National Weather Service has posted a red flag warning for Chaffee County today. Accordingly, Sheriff Pete Palmer, as fire warden for Chaffee County, has declared this a „no burn‰ day. NO open fires are allowed within the county, including all exempted fires such as campfires, camp stoves, and outdoor smoking.

Chaffee County residents are urged to be extremely careful during this period of high fire danger and to report any sightings of fires or smoke to the sheriff‚s communication center by calling 911.

# # #

How many of teenagers could use support for some of the challenges they face?

How many of teenagers could use support for some of the challenges they face? Next year, Salida High School is offering a Leadership Class where students learn the leadership and personal development skills that are taught by some of the most influential leaders in the world. During this class, we will practice goal setting/empowerment skills taught by Anthony Robbins; Nonviolent Communication for conflict resolution, taught by Marshall Rosenberg; and principles for living taught by the Arbinger Group.

Students will also study teachings of Victor Frankl, Corrie Ten Boom, Leo Buscaglia, Susan Jeffers, Jim and Charles Fay and others.

Throughout the semester, students have the opportunity to read and incorporate teachings and exercises from the above leaders into their lives. In order to more fully empower students with skills, SOSS recently donated $500 toward Leadership training.

Next fall, I am attending the International Intensive Training in Nonviolent Communication. Skills gained from this conference will be implemented in the SHS Leadership class. I am currently raising funds in order to attend this conference. If you have any questions or would like to donate to training for our Leadership class, please contact Shannon Beaulieu at Salida High School.

Thank you to SOSS for your generous support. Your contribution makes a difference in the lives of Salida’s students and citizens.

Thanks again for your support!

Sincerely,
