Competitors start at the Continental Divide, on Monarch Pass with a backcountry ski leg, mountain bikes carry competitors in the shadow of Mt. Shavano to the banks of the Arkansas River where whitewater kayaks take paddlers into downtown Salida for an exciting finish.

Two hundred thousand dollars from GOCO and some additional local funds will be used to improve the whitewater park, install climbing boulders and construct a small park and trails near South Main.

The Upper Arkansas River flows out of the high peaks above Leadville, Colorado on a journey that eventually leads to its confluence with the Mississippi in the State of Arkansas. In Chaffee County the Arkansas River has always served as the figurative and literal lifeblood of our communities. From fueling historic industry and agriculture to serving as the foundation of our current tourist based economy; the Ark is central to the identity of our high mountain valley.
