Salida Mountain Trails called for volunteers to help build singletrack on Saturday, December 6, 2008. We had a great turnout and our energetic volunteers helped build 1000 feet of new trail. Lots of progress is being made thanks to enthusiastic support from the people of Chaffee County!

Nearly 50 volunteers showed up Saturday morning to help with the construction of the Backbone Trail east of Tenderfoot Hill. One thousand feet of new trail was built! Special thanks to members of the Chaffee County Running Club and Arkansas Valley Velo.

Volunteers get orientation from Andrew Mesesan

The morning was chilly, which probably made it difficult for volunteers to show up, but within minutes the extra clothing was not needed. The consensus was that the day’s temperature was perfect for trail-building.

Workers buffing out a nice section of trail

This addition to Salida’s local trail network will be usable right away since we were able to connect to an existing trail in two places. The trail we connected to is quite steep and this new section gives trail users a longer, more meandering option.

Another view of Salida and Ouray & Chipeta

This section of the Backbone Trail gives trail users a view of the Tenderfoot Trail, completed by Salida Mountain Trails with the help of volunteers in April of 2006. Also visible is the top of Tenderfoot Hill, much of Salida, and the Sawatch Range to the west.

We hope the community will get out and start enjoying the new trail section right away. Thanks again to our volunteers. We’ll be publishing the dates of our monthly volunteer days soon so that everyone who wants can be involved.

2009-ccrc-application2

The Chaffee County Running Club’s mission is to promote running for health, recreation and competition for runners of all ages and abilities in Chaffee and surrounding counties.
The C.C.R.C. is a 501 (C) (3) Organization and Colorado Non-Profit Corporation and has been in existence for nearly a decade.
The group has about 75 members ranging from 5 to over 70 years of age. Running abilities range from beginners to serious runners running distances from 1 to 100 miles.
The club currently organizes a number of informal regular events and gatherings centered around a common theme of running. During the summer months, the club gathers weekly for a Wednesday evening run of 60-90- minutes. Other gatherings include a weekend run, track workouts and speed work, going to races together, special longer runs, adventure mountain runs, and potlucks.

CCRC meets for a run and potluck at Angel of Shavano Trailhead

The club puts on a dozen more formal runs and races such as the Run Through Time marathon, The Goblin Gallop Kids fun run, the Spiral Drive run, Two Turkey Relay, Turquoise Lake 20 mile Snowshoe Run, and others.
Current Club direction leans more toward the social and recreational aspects of running as opposed to the serious competitive aspects.
Membership in the CCRC is open to all. Members get benefits like an informative newsletter, race and gear discounts, invitations to special runs and events and more.
