After hearing input from numerous residents at the City Council meeting Tuesday, Council decided to move forward with the H Street rebuild project. The street design was modified to widen the parkways from 4.6 feet to 6 feet, allowing several mature street trees to be saved in the project area. The larger parkway will also provide additional room for new plantings to grow and allow larger tree species to be planted.
Public Works Director Bob Salmi said the next step is [...]

The Final Scene
Released: January 2014.
The creative path is a long and winding road, so Jason Koski wasn’t surprised by the circuitous journey he took in recording The Final Scene.
Born in Duluth, Minnesota and raised in nearby Grand Rapids, Koski’s early introduction to music came in the form of his grandmother playing old-time country songs around the house as she went about her daily chores. A self-taught musician, Koski credits a diverse genre of influences from the heavy [...]

On January 28th, The Mountain Mail reported on page 16 that I suggested dwelling units be limited to 25 feet in height at the January 27 Planning Commission meeting. That is not exactly what I said. There was a fair bit of technical discussion last night, so confusion is understandable.
The new and old Salida zoning codes contemplate that single family dwellings up to 35 feet tall might be built on commercial lots already containing commercial structures. Thirty five feet seems [...]

Last week the city’s purchase of 80 acres in the Arkansas Hills to the north of the city was finalized. The mayor, council, city administration and the Lowrys should be commended. This transaction will keep this land open for recreation and wildlife as well as protect the views from our city. The purchase was consistent not only with our comprehensive plan, but also with the intended use of Conservation Trust Fund money, which was employed for the purchase.
This particular piece [...]

When it’s cold and windy outside, what do you do with your kids? Kids, especially the young ones, are often unwilling to snuggle and drink cocoa all day on a miserable day—and we all know how important physical activity is to a growing child! And while winter has its many laudable qualities, the ability to quickly get the kids out of the house and active is not one of them.
Rowdy at Riverside is an on-going Salida Recreation program to help [...]
