Make a Splash

Each year, Longfellow Elementary School brings their physical education classes to the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center for swim lessons during the month of April. During this time the pool will be more crowded than usual, so staff at the pool urge users to please plan their visits accordingly.

Land Trust hosts Voices of Valley literary event

The Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas is hosting Voices of the Valley, an evening of poems and essays inspired by the natural landscape and water resources where we live and play today at 7 p.m. at The Book Haven in Salida. Colorado Central Magazine is a sponsor. Local author Andrea Jones will headline. Writers from Shavano Poets, the Chaffee Country Writers Exchange and middle-school literary contest winners will also read from their works. Free and open to the public.

Tree Planting Project

Teachers in Colorado can still apply to receive free seedling trees for class planting projects this spring. The Colorado State Forest Service has extended the application deadline for Project Learning Tree for trained educators to receive free seedling trees from its Fort Collins nursery. Interested teachers can apply to receive seedlings for planting projects on public or private land, or as awards to students for events and contests.

Revelers Beware

For the second year, The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office has received a grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to fund overtime for patrol deputies enforcing statutes related to drunk and drugged driving.  Deputies will be working these assignments over the Saint Patrick’s Day weekend March 14 through March 18, a time traditionally associated with parties and alcohol consumption.  The grant, totaling $3,000, is for the first half of 2014 and is expected to be renewed for enforcement efforts [...]

Salida Budget Accountability

I believe the 2011 budget was the last budget produced by the City of Salida that met the GASB standards. Our city officials have now spent $20,000 fighting to defend their right not to publish a budget that meets GASB standards. The Colorado Legislature and the National Governmental Standards Board (GASG) hold the it is essential to the proper functioning of a representative democracy that governing bodies produce clear and detailed budgets, including clear and detailed accounting of prior years.
