Candidates for FIBArk board invited to apply

Community members interested in being a FIBArk board member are invited to submit a letter of interest now through the end of the month.

The FIBArk Whitewater Festival presented by Eddyline Brewing is Salida’s premier summer event and will celebrate its 67th anniversary June 18-21, 2015. Planning has already begun for the festival which draws hundreds of athletes and thousands of spectators to the city.

Board members are asked to commit to a three-year term and are responsible for organizing specific events during the festival. Evening meetings are held monthly in winter and early spring and then twice a month as the festival approaches. Board members are chosen from the Salida community and people with a background in rafting, kayaking, outdoor recreation, festival management, entertainment, and sponsorship retention are encouraged to apply.

Current board members are Christopher Kolomitz, president; Jennifer Fritz, vice-president; Brenda Vasilakos, treasurer; Ali Gober, secretary; Ryan Cramm; Aaron Vasilakos; Terry Deveney and Tom Barry.

In recent years FIBArk has used an event coordinator to help plan and run the festival, lessening the burden upon board members. In 2015 Iron Orchid Events will return for its third year in a row as event coordinator.

The FIBArk board also continues to place a greater emphasis on the FIBArk Youth Paddling Program. The popular instruction program uses FIBArk equipment and volunteer coaches to introduce young paddlers to the sport. Additionally, the board is in the process of laying the groundwork for major renovations and long-term improvements of the FIBArk boathouse. According to Kolomitz, both of these activities present an avenue to promoting whitewater paddling and river stewardship.

“Make no doubt about it, being a FIBArk board member is a ton of work,” said Kolomitz. “However, it’s totally rewarding and it’s kind of a rite of passage in Salida with new and old community members lending their talent to this historic event.”

Letters of interest may be submitted two ways, either by email to [email protected] or via mail to FIBArk Boat Races Inc., PO Box 762, Salida. Questions by be directed to Kolomitz at 207-3956 or via email. Deadline is Oct. 31.
