Open house for new physicians – Thurs, Nov 6

Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center (HRRMC) is holding an open house for six new physicians on its medical staff, on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the hospital atrium, by the main entrance. Everyone is invited to attend.

David Kanar, M.D., specializes in internal medicine and nephrology, the medical specialty concerned with kidney disease. He sees patients at the hospital’s Specialty Clinic and HRRMC Buena Vista Health Center. Dr. Kanar earned his medical degree at Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School and did his residency in internal medicine at Loyola University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in nephrology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.

Cheryl Edwards, M.D., is a board-certified gynecologist who provides services at the HRRMC Medical Clinics in Salida and performs surgery at the hospital. Dr. Edwards earned her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
Erika Gelgand, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and provides hospitalist coverage at the Salida hospital. Dr. Gelgand graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of New Mexico Hospital.

Franco Rea, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified surgeon, specializes in vascular surgery for diseases of the arteries and veins, and in thoracic surgery for diseases of the heart, lungs and other organs in the chest. He sees patients in the hospital’s Specialty Clinic and performs surgery at the hospital. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Ohio State. He followed that with a fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the University of Louisville.

Joshua Visitacion, M.D., an emergency medicine physician, earned his doctor of medicine degree at the University of Utah School of Medicine and completed his emergency medicine residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He has worked in the HRRMC Emergency Department on an as-needed basis since 2011 and began working full time at the hospital on June 1. He is board certified in emergency medicine.

John Wierdsma, D.O., also an emergency medicine physician, completed his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and his emergency medicine residency at Michigan State University, where he was also an associate clinical professor. Dr. Wierdsma works part time in the HRRMC Emergency Department.
