Forest Service offers free trees

Coloradans who are interested in conservation goals such as creating natural windbreaks, improving wildlife habitat or reforesting properties impacted by wildfire or floods are eligible to purchase the low-cost seedlings. CSFS Nursery Manager Josh Stolz says Colorado-grown species are adaptable, hardy and ideal for a variety of conservation uses.

Salida Rec relay fun run – Sat, Nov 22

Registration will be held from 9:00 – 9:30 am at the amphitheater at Riverside Park and costs $3 for Chaffee County Running Club members and $5 for non-members. Make checks payable to C.C.R.C. Teams will be chosen by random drawing at 9:30am. Two minute head starts will be given to all female runners, any runner 60 years old or older, and any runner under 14 years of age.

Benson’s to host Indian food night – Wed, Nov 19

Benson’s held a similar event in April of this year, and it was extremely popular. The restaurant expects reservations for both seatings to fill up quickly, and advises patrons to call or stop by soon to make their reservations.


Painted Trees, a Salida original

I am very excited to share with Salida the experience of my painted trees. These trees made their debut back in 2005 on Tenderfoot Mountain, during which time I denied any involvement, yet enjoyed the anonymity of creating these pieces I also took pleasure in seeing folks finding their own delight and personal ownership with them.

So, flash forward to 2011, I was privileged to bring a painted tree with a whole crew of Salida folks to the Burning Man [...]

This Saturday the 8th come support the Salida School Garden and join us to pick your own carrots and onions! From 10-11:30am, community members are invited to join Guidestone at the Salida School Garden on Holman Ave for a pick-your-own carrot and onion picking party. Onions will be $1/lb and carrots, $2/lb. Please bring your own bag or box to bring home your bounty!

Land Trust annual event – Friday, Nov 14

On Friday, November 14, 2014 the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas is holding their Annual Event and Fundraiser from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Salida SteamPlant Ballroom. Salida hospital displays collages by Conrad Nelson

Nelson began creating collages after a close artist friend died and left her entire collection of papers and supplies to Nelson. In her collages, Nelson combines the papers she inherited with her own past work, fabric, old photographs, sewing and other embellishments to tell a visual story, make an ethical statement, or recall her own family history.


Land Trust Hosts Beaver Workshop

On November 6, 2014 the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas is sponsoring a program on Living with Beavers, 7 to 8:30 pm, Community Room of the Sangre de Cristo Electric Association, 29780 Highway 24, Buena Vista, Colorado. The program will be presented by Bill Goosmann a riparian ecologist who has managed statewide wetlands programs for Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Living with beavers, an LTUA event – Nov 6

Bill will discuss techniques that can be used by both private landowners and public land managers to deal with beaver conflicts. There are a variety of techniques available to address problems caused by beavers that would prevent direct killing of the animals. He will also talk about the natural history of beavers and some of the benefits they provide to our local ecosystems.
