FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ben Goldfarb Presents Beavers: Their Landscapes Our Future on April 11
Upper Arkansas Valley – April 2, 2019
6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11
Salida SteamPlant Theater
In his book Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter, author Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong – distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America’s lakes and rivers. The consequences were profound: streams eroded, wetlands dried, and species lost vital habitat.
Today, a growing coalition of “Beaver Believers” – including scientists, ranchers and passionate citizens – recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are often far healthier – for humans and nonhumans alike – than those without them. In his presentation April 11, Goldfarb will describe beaver biology, ecology and history; detail the many environmental benefits provided by beavers, including habitat creation, water storage and pollution filtration; and discuss how landowners and municipalities around the country are learning to coexist with these keystone rodents.
The presentation is part of the Conservancy’s 2019 lecture series.
An award-winning environmental journalist whose work has appeared in Science, Mother Jones, The Guardian, High Country News, The Washington Post, Audubon Magazine, Orion Magazine, Scientific American and more, Goldfarb holds a Master of Environmental Management degree from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and is a finalist for the 2019 PEN/EO Wilson Literary Science Writing Award.
Eager will be on sale that night in partnership with The Book Haven of Salida, and Goldfarb will sign books after his talk.
The talk is co-sponsored by EcoMetrics, Inc of Buena Vista.
Tickets: $5 for Conservancy members, $10 non-members, all students free.
