GARNA Presents a Writing Workshop and Evening of Poetry with Aaron Abeyta Sunday October 28

Join Colorado’s native Poet Laureate, Professor Aaron Abeyta, in this delightful poetry event and literary exploration of wildness, wilderness and the human condition. The event will begin with “The Four Homes of Poetry”, an afternoon writing workshop in which Professor Abeyta will examine the four cornerstones of poetry, analyze how acclaimed writers utilize these principles, and explore ways writers of all levels may access these tools to improve their craft. Afterwards, “Lean In and Listen with Aaron Abeyta” for a magical evening of poetry, as he recites selected pieces from his four books of poetry. “There is no other voice that conjures the sky and keeps count of stars as human migrations, moving, fading, and bursting anew, as Abeyta’s,” quoted Juan Felipe Herrera, United States Poet Laureate.

Aaron Abeyta is a professor of English at Adams State University and Mayor of his hometown, Antonito, Colorado. He is author of four collections of poetry and one novel. He received an American Book Award and the Colorado Book Award for his book colcha, and he was a finalist for the 2007 Colorado Book Award and El Premio Aztlan for his novel, Rise, Do Not Be Afraid. Abeyta was also awarded a Colorado Council on the Arts Fellowship for poetry and was recently named the Poet Laureate of Colorado’s Western Slope by the Karen Chamberlain Poetry Festival.

The writing workshop will take place at the Salida High School from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm on Sunday, October 28. The cost of the workshop is $20 for GARNA members and $25 for non-members. The evening of poetry reading will take place at the Scout Hut in Salida, 210 E. Sackett Ave., from 6:00pm-7:30pm, doors open at 5:30pm. The cost of the program is $12 for GARNA members and $15 for non-members.
