New Happenings at the Hutchinson Homestead & Learning Center

The Hutchinson Homestead & Learning Center is thrilled to be opening its doors to the public this summer with some exciting new additions. Thanks to grant support from History Colorado State Historical Fund and the National Park Service Save America’s Treasures grant program, and grant sponsorship by Salida Area Parks Open Space and Trails (SPOT), Guidestone Colorado and a wonderful team of historians, designers, and fabricators have developed new interpretive panels, displays and welcome video in the Visitor Center, a new entrance sign and outdoor signage, a brochure, website, updated tours, and more.

To celebrate completion of this work, we invite the public to join us for our first tour day and summer kick off on Saturday, June 13, from 10am-3pm. Activities throughout the day will include interpretive exhibits and the new welcome video in the Visitor Center, guided tours of the Homestead buildings and grounds, and hands-on traditional crafts for children. From 10-11:30am, Guidestone Colorado’s Farmhands Program will also be offering a Family Program called Water on the Ranch. Designed for children ages 5 and up with an adult, this program will highlight the importance of water on a ranch and will include some hands-on help in flood irrigating Hutchinson Ranch pastures! Please register in advance for this Family Program. At 12pm, Colleen Perschbacher of Older Than Dirt Construction will host a tour highlighting preservation work at the site. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the shade of the willow and apple trees and stay awhile! Costs include: $5/ person entrance fee includes general tours, children’s activities and light refreshments; $10/ person for the preservation tour; $15/ 1 adult and child for the family program, $5 each add’l sibling. The Hutchinson Homestead & Learning Center is located at 8913 W. Hwy 50, on the north side of the road, halfway between Salida and Poncha Springs.
