Salida Aspen Concert Sat., July 18

7:30 p.m., Sat., July 18

Concert pianists Orion Weiss and Shai Wosner are scheduled to perform well-known works by Johannes Brahms and Antonín Dvořák Saturday, July 18 during the continuing Salida Aspen Concert series.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. following a pre-concert talk with the artists at 6:45 p.m. at Salida High School auditorium, 26 Jones Avenue in Salida, Colo.
The two pianists are faculty members at Aspen Music Festival and School. They will play pieces for solo piano and duets (one piano, four hands).
The Brahms selections include the “Hungarian Dances” and “Sixteen Waltzes.” From Dvořák, the duo will perform “Slavonic Dances” and “Legends,” a cycle of small-scale pieces written for piano duet in 1881.
Also on the program is “Mother Goose” by French composer Maurice Ravel and “Bilder aus dem Osten” or “Pictures of the East” by Robert Schumann.
Orion Weiss, a young American musician to watch, has performed with the major American orchestras—Chicago and Boston symphonies, and Los Angeles and New York Philharmonic. He spearheaded a recording project of the complete Gershwin works for piano and orchestra with his longtime collaborators the Buffalo Philharmonic and JoAnn Falletta and, in 2012, released a recital album of Dvořák, Prokofiev, and Bartók piano works.
Shai Wosner has appeared playing piano with major orchestras worldwide and in a broad range of repertoire from Beethoven and Mozart to Schoenberg and Ligeti. He is also sought after by colleagues to perform duo recitals because of his versatility and spirit of partnership. Mr. Wosner has recorded three albums of solo works on the Onyx label: a sonata and other works by Schubert in 2014, Schubert’s folk music in 2011 and works by Brahms and Schoenberg in 2010.

The concert, with underwriting by Elise Backinger and Kent Strickland, is the second of six in the 39th annual Salida Aspen Concert series.
Tickets are $15 and $3 for students and can be purchased at the door or online at Information is also available from president Kate Larkin, 530-0020 or administrator Jean Hanfelt, 539-6467.
