PIANIST JOHN O’CONOR TO PERFORM ALL-BEETHOVEN CONCERT, 7:30 P.M., Monday, July 27
For the third concert in its series of six, Salida-Aspen Concerts presents pianist John O’Conor in an all-Beethoven recital at 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 27 in the auditorium of Salida High School, 26 Jones Avenue.
O’Conor, a master interpreter of Ludwig van Beethoven, has played with leading orchestras throughout the world and appeared in Salida in 2008-9. He will be interviewed on stage at 6:45 p.m. before the concert begins.
O’Conor will play Beethoven’s dramatic “Piano Sonata No. 05 in C minor, op. 10, no. 1,” and Beethoven’s “Six Bagatelles, op. 126,” a series of miniature, single-movement mood pieces.
For the second half of the program, O’Conor will play “33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli in C major, op. 120.” In this composition, Beethoven develops a simple waltz theme into an entire work of musical imagination just as J. S. Bach did earlier in his Goldberg Variations. Both compositions are considered exemplary.
Since 1973, when he won unanimous first prize at the International Beethoven Piano Competition, John O’Conor has become a leading figure in the world of classical music. In addition to playing with big-city orchestras, he has collaborated with major chamber music groups such as the Cleveland, Tokyo, Vermeer and Takács quartets.
Mr. O’Conor has recorded the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos, the complete Mozart Concertos and the complete nocturnes, sonatas, and concertos of his fellow countryman, Irish composer John Field.
Mr. O’Conor is on the faculty this summer at the Aspen Music Festival and School. He chairs the piano division at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia and is a faculty member at the Glenn Gould School in Toronto, international visiting artist at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and visiting professor at Showa University in Japan.
The O’Conor concert is underwritten by David B. Wancura, certified public accountant.
